History of the MLS

The Multiple Listing Service in use today is very advanced and easy to use, but it was not always that way. In the late 1800's, when nobody knew what a microchip was, there were no computers or internet to exchange information about property for sale or the prices being asked. It was difficult for someone in the next county or state to know what property was available. To facilitate the exchange of information, the first "Realtors" established exchanges. Each broker would keep a physical book of the properties they had available. On a regular schedule, these brokers would meet with each other and exchange the information in their books. These exchanges grew and became regional in nature.

Regional Exchanges of MLS

The system of regional exchanges took hold in the early 20th century and spread across the United States until most areas had established a multiple listing service. This became what we know today as Local Board of Realtors. These boards exist today, but they no longer need to meet to exchange information from their physical books.
